2019 Taiwan Lantern Festival 台灣燈會

Taiwan Lantern Festival

The "2019 Taiwan Lantern Festival" will officially open on February 19, 2019 in Donggang Village, Pingtung County in the Dapeng Bay National Scenic Area.

This year’s "Taiwan Lantern Festival" will be its 30th anniversary, and it will again be filled with innovations and new styles. For the first time, the Tourism Bureau has decided to locate the Lantern Festival in a National Scenic Area, allowing the brilliant lanterns shine in the south of the country. The famous black tuna of Donggang Village will be an important design theme. Organizers plan to leave the main theme lantern standing long after the festival is over, so that it can serve as a new landmark for Dapeng Bay.

This year, the main lantern will have a height of 16 meters, and its LED lights will have more than 12 million pixels. Visitors can enjoy an ever-changing optical fantasy and also enjoy viewing the lantern from different angles. In addition to new lantern experiences, visitors for the first time this year can also have the unique experience of viewing the lantern festival on a night cruise, which is one of the wonderful advantages of holding this year’s events in beautiful Dapeng Bay.

The “little lantern” is the part of the festival most anticipated by children each year. This year, this lantern is named the "2019 Pingan Pig", which is conceived of as a grandfatherly pig of the Pingtung area. The characters in “Pingan” combine words those for “Pingtung” and “peace.” This warm-hearted pig will entertain visitors with its cute large nose, eyes and ears, and in a functional manner can hold 2,019 coins.

This year, the Taiwan Lantern Festival will be integrated into the local “Grandfather Pig of the Wind” culture of Pingtung. The different sections of lanterns will also highlight Pingtung’s rich marine resources and special agricultural products. Also on full display will be the unique and beautiful scenery of Dapeng Bay, including performances of dancing water and water curtains. In addition, to make this year’s Taiwan Lantern Festival an even deeper experience for visitors, several well-known artists have been invited to display their various works in a section of the festival that will be home to 30 lanterns. This will make for a beautiful blend of the arts and local culture. Finally, organizers will also hold a “PP Pig Party” for the kids, which will include special rides and other activities in an exclusive area for children.

The 2019 Taiwan Lantern Festival will officially open at 7:00 pm on Tuesday February 19th. After it opens, 30-minute special light displays will be held on the hour in the area around the main lantern.

As one of the famous events worldwide, Kaohsiung Lantern Festival attracts numerous domestic and international tourists to see the lanterns and visit the City during Chinese New Year. With “treasure river” as its theme, it will integrate the Chinese zodiac of this year, the pig, to create the One Hundred Pigs lantern zone, where pigs will be presented with rounded and cute looks. To take advantage of the unique riverside landscape, it will also be staged on the waterfront and designed with cultural, artistic and local features. Various exhibits and performances will be held here to present the charm of the Kaohsiung Lantern Festival.

The 2019 Kaohsiung Lantern Festival will be held on both banks of Love River (between Kaohsiung Bridge and Qixian Bridge) for 12 days, from February 9th to February 20th (January 5th to January 16th in the Lunar Calendar). In four themed lantern zones, Kids Fun, Good Old Days, Star Lights and Romantic Love, there are some large creative designs, including a gorgeous 100-meter long lantern tunnel, a wonder maze, the light and shadow waltz, and the amorous kaleidoscope; with changes of light and shadow, these designs create more fun and chances to interact with the audience. In addition to traditional lantern zones, there are also creative new designs awaiting you to enjoy the magnificent lantern festival at the waterfront. In remembering the good old days, this harbor city is moving toward the new technology world!

To reproduce the atmosphere of the 1960s when people would walk around to watch lanterns, eat delicious food and go shopping, there’ll be a retro market on the riverside of Love River. In this early-style night market, one can find cotton candy, dough figurines and sugar painting, which makes the lantern festival the most unique one in Taiwan. Local groups will perform daily at the Kaohsiung Citizen Theater. Other exciting programs include , the Pili puppet show and Ming Hwa Yuan Arts & Cultural Group.

In addition to the Lantern Festival on the riverside, there are Three-Shan lantern festivals in Kaohsiung as well, including Fo Guang Shan, Cishan, and Gangshan, which present their unique local features. Come to Kaohsiung to watch the lanterns and enjoy the cheerful atmosphere of Chinese New Year!

Siaogangshan, located between Gangshan and Yanchao Districts, covers 1.8 hectares of land.

Siaogangshan Skywalk Park features a 88-meter skywalk inspired by music. The cable-stayed bridge looks like a violin. Its steel cables symbolize violin strings, while the spiral staircases at the end represent a harmonica which seems to respond to the violin in a song.

Standing at the bridge, one can enjoy the beautiful birds-eye-views of Agongdian Reservoir, Agongdian Forest Park, and Agongdian River and its nearby plains. When the sky is clear, visitors can even find in the distance the magnificent North Dawu Mountain and its surrounding hills. 85 Sky Tower which is Kaohsiung’s major landmark, Banping Mountain, Shoushan, and the Taiwan Strait can also be easily viewed by then.
